In steel, Silicon Manganese is employed as a deoxidizer and alloying ingredient. Depending on the amount added and the combined effect with other alloying elements, both silicon and manganese have a significant impact on the characteristics of steel. Silicon and manganese are deoxidisers because they have a substantial attraction for oxygen.
Silicon Manganese:
In the steelmaking process, manganese is a significant deoxidiser. Manganese is required to deoxidise nearly all steel grades. Manganese can also boost the deoxidation impact of powerful deoxidisers like silicon and aluminium. The oxygen product formed by manganese deoxidation has a low melting point and is easily floatable. To avoid breakage, all industrial steels must be desulfurised with a minor quantity of manganese.
Ferro Silicon:
In the smelting of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, ferro silicon alloy is mainly utilised as a charge material. Ferro Silicon is an essential metallurgical raw material used in the iron and steel industry as a deoxidiser in crude steel smelting. Because SiO2 generates a lot of heat, it's a good idea to keep the molten steel at a higher temperature when deoxidising. Low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, alloy steel bearing steel, heat-resistant steel, and electrical silicon steel all employ ferrosilicon as an alloying element addition.
