Silicon Manganese
Silicon Manganese alloy is made of manganese, silicon, iron alloy, and a small amount of carbon and other elements. Silicon manganese alloy which has wide application and large output, is commonly used as compound deoxidizer. It is alsothe main material in the production of manganese metal with low carbon ferro manganese and silicon hot method.
Silicon manganese alloy is produced of reducing manganese oxide in manganese ore (including manganese-rich slag)and silicon dioxide in silicaby carbon in a submerged arc furnace.
Manganese and silicon are the main alloying elements used in carbon steel. Manganese is one of the most important deoxidizers in the steelmaking process. Almost all grades ofsteel require manganese to deoxidize. As the oxygen product generated by manganese deoxidation has a lowmelting point, it is easy to float up; Manganese can also increase the deoxidation effect of strong deoxidizers such as silicon and aluminum. All industrial steels need to add a small amount of manganese as a desulfurizing agent, so that the steel canavoid breakingwhen it ishot rolled, forged andinother processes.
Manganese is also the most important alloying element in various gradesofsteel. Toincrease the structural strength of steel, also 15% manganese is added to alloy steel. Silicon is the most important alloying element after manganese in pig iron and carbon steel. Iniron andsteel metallurgy, silicon is mainly used as a deoxidizer for molten metal, or as an alloy additive to increase steel strength and improve its performance. Silicon is also an effective graphitizing medium, which canchange the carbon in cast iron into free graphite carbon. The silicon added to standard gray cast iron andnodular cast iron can reach to 4%. A large amount of manganese and silicon are added to the molten steel in the form of ferro alloys: ferro manganese, silico manganese and ferro silicon.
Silicon manganese alloy is a substitute for ferrosilicon as a deoxidizer in iron andsteel smelting process. Silicon manganese alloy can not only deoxidize, but also increase the manganese content in steel andimprove the strength of steel. Therefore, the amount of silicon manganese alloy used as deoxidizer continues to increase, there is noother alternatives. In China, the average consumption of silicon manganese alloy per ton of steel is about 25 kg.
